“What! Another damn picture …?” On the road to Koloa Town.

This road wasn’t the most pleasant ride … too many fast, big trucks.

Spouting Horn, holes in the reef through which the ocean rushes, giving a great, big whoosh and a fountain of spray.

“Now, you take this section, you go there and I’ll see what’s cooking over here …”. A sparrow, mynah and dove stake out their respective territories on the beach.

Rock and Roll did not die – and we wondered why, in certain venues, we did not always receive service in a timely fashion …

The salt water and constant wind have really eroded the stone of these grave markers – the engraved names are barely visible on many, even though they’re only 100 years old.

Monk seal on the beach at Poipu. A small population of endangered monk seals lives on Kauai and this one was sunning itself on the beach while we were there. We also saw a large green sea turtle swimming just off the beach.

Every time a wave hit him, he cracked an eyeball and peered out.

After fueling up on shrimp and artichokes, Wendy, Ty and I rolled through Hanalei’s relatively quiet streets.

Two aging Aphrodites emerge from the waves at Hanalei Beach. Apparently this is where Bali Hai was filmed.

Hanakapi’ai Beach – the end of the road. From here the Na Pali coast stretches on to the west.

Wendy dropped us off half-way up the road to Waimea canyon so that we could come screaming down on our bikes.

The Dead by Billy Collins

The dead are always looking down on us they say,
While we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
They are looking down through the glass bottom boats of heaven
As they row themselves slowly through eternity.

They watch the tops of our heads moving below on earth,
And when we lie down in a field or on a couch,
Drugged perhaps by the hum of a warm afternoon,
They think we are looking back at them,
Which makes them lift their oars and fall silent
And wait, like parents, for us to close our eyes.
