A stream has risen from the ashes of the Vancouver Torrent, to mangle the metaphor. O Happy Day, the phoenix has risen! A small group of intrepid skaters and cyclists met under the Burrard Street Bridge last night for a Friday night city roll. What a fantastic night for it – not too hot, but beautifully warm and stunningly blue cloudless sky. At around 8 pm myself, Barb, Doug, Ty, Christine, Sylvia and John Waye headed off down the seawall past the old Fiddlehead’s and Marmalade bars, down through George Wainborn Park, past the new Erickson waterfront building out to Science World. We then doubled back through Chinatown with a quick stop to admire two police horses under the viaduct munching on grass after the Police and Fire Fighters parade. Onward through the Chinatown night market, Strathcona, down Heatley Street and up across the Main Street viaduct with a pause for pictures at the top.
After zooming down the other side – wheeeeeeeeeee – we rolled underneath Canada Place and up the elevator in the parking lot to the new waterfront convention centre.
Wow – what a beautiful place. A green, living roof with grasses and native plants, a huge wonderful plaza with ramps snaking down the side, lots of blue and green lighting and a backdrop of Coal Harbour and the seaplanes.
We rolled around in there with the crowd for a while and watched the sun setting against the tall glass towers of downtown. Once back down on the wall again, we paused at the Marine Pub waterpark for Ty to ride his bike through the sprinklers. Then off again through the crowds along the Coal Harbour seawall, around past the Bayshore Hotel and the Crime Lab restaurant, then under Georgia Street and a very fast skate with Ty wailing on his bell to warn the pedestrians that we were comin’ through, back through Stanley Park to finish at Marmalade on the seawall for Bellinis and apple pie with ice cream. We were famished and, speaking for myself, my feet were killing me, but great fun was had by all. Look for another Friday Night Roll coming soon!
